IRS DISPELS MYTHS ABOUT TAX REFUNDS

April 29, 2022 - Douglas Myser

IRS dispels myths about tax refunds. In IRS Publication IR-2022-80, dated April 12, 2022, the IRS put out this publication in an attempt to cut down on the number of phone calls it gets about "Where is my tax refund ?", which can put a tax on the IRS system, so to speak. Some have to do with common myths that abound regarding tax refunds. While the IRS continues to process tax refunds, and is working to clear the backlog of tax returns from the 2020 tax year, it is worthy to say that the average time in 2022 for the IRS to process and deliver a tax refund in 2021 is less than 21 days. Nine out of 10 meet that criteria. The average refund so far this year is $3226. IRS dispels myths about tax refunds.

The "Where's My Refund ?" function on the IRS website, which is located at IRS.GOV, can be used to check the status of a tax return within 24 hours after a taxpayer receives their e-file acceptance notification. The "Where's My Refund ? tool is updated only once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so there's no need to check the status more than once a day. Taxpayers should only call the IRS tax help hotline to talk to a representative if it has been more than 21 days since their tax return was e-filed, or more than six weeks since mailing their return. For those waiting for the 2020 tax return, the IRS is making progress, but that backlog will not be cleared out until late fall 2022.

Common myth number one. Calling the IRS or visiting an IRS office will speed up the tax refund. For some reason believe this, but doing this will not speed up the tax refund at all
