COVID SLOWS DOWN TAX REFUNDS AT IRS

April 11, 2022 - Douglas Myser

Covid slows down tax refunds at IRS. Due to the government lockdown of the IRS during the IRS pandemic's winter months, both in 2020 and 2021, the IRS has had a difficult time catching up with the Tax Returns that have been filed, and at the same time they are trying to overhaul the oldest computer system in the entire U.S. Government. Add to that the administration of the stimulus checks and you have a recipe for disaster. Lately though, Congress has taken notice, and the IRS troubles are going to be put into a rear view mirror in short order. Not only is additional funding on the way, but the IRS has just hired 10,000 additional people to take care of the tax return backlog. That's in addition to the 700 internal IRS personnel that were moved to file returns as well. Covid slows down tax refunds at IRS.

Taxpayers caught up in the IRS mess have faced obstacles for mortage applications and other types of consumer borrowing like car and college loans, since lenders often require borrowers to submit their latest tax returns to prove their incomes and job status. As Congress is getting an earful from constituents who have had enough, and can't even get through to the IRS, the National Taxpayer Advocate stated that in 2021 only 12 percent of calls to the IRS were ever answered, Congressional leaders are realizing that budget cuts have played a role in the current mess and that has started the call for large inflows of money to the IRS. In addition to the 10,000 people recently hired, the IRS has other pans to beef up the Collection Division of the IRS, going after past due tax accounts.
