INQUIRY INTO AUDIT OF COMEY AND MCCABE
July 18, 2022 - Douglas Myser
Inquiry into audit of Comey and McCabe. The head of the IRS has asked the Treasury Department's internal investigator to check into the audits of the perceived foes of former President Trump, former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI Director Andres McCabe. The New York Times broke the story that showed that both men were audited after investigations into Trump. The investigation started the very next day, after the Times story broke open the damning news. Comey was audited for his federal tax returns for 2017 and 2019, according to the Times. McCabe was audited for his 2019 federal tax return. Trump, who appointed current Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rettig to his post, served as president from January 2017 through January 2021. Inquiry into audit of Comey and McCabe.
The New York Times gave statistics to back up its story, showing that only 1 in 30,600 IRS income tax returns were subject to the intensive audits, known as National Reserch Program audits, for their 2017 returns. The IRS data book showed going back from 2011 to 2019, that the percentage of audits of all Americans on IRS returns was 0.55%. TIGTA, or the Tax Inspector General for Tax Administration, is responsible for the review, TIGTA is the investigative arm of the Treasury Department, which overseas the IRS.
Trump fired Comey in 2017 as the bureau was investigating possible ties between members of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. McCabe, who then became acting FBI director, was fired in March 2018 by Trump's then attorney general, Jeff Sessions, just days before McCabe was set to retire and become eligible for full pension benefits.
