When Are Taxes Due in 2023?
The deadline for filing federal income taxes and state income taxes are different depending on your state of residence. Below are the relevant dates if you're looking for the answer to the question: "When can we file taxes 2023?"
April 18, 2023 - Federal and State Tax Deadline
It’s important to remember that the deadline for federal and state taxes this year is Tuesday, April 18, 2023. Historically, the deadline had been April 15, however, the date for filing your 2022 taxes in 2023 have changed.
Due to April 15 being a Saturday and the following work day, April 17, being observed as Emancipation Day in Washington D.C.,the new deadline for federal tax returns is set on April 18.
There are a few exceptions for filing federal taxes. You'll get an extension if you serve in the military abroad or if you live in disaster areas in California, Georgia, and Alabama.
Other states including Iowa, Virginia, Delaware and Louisiana have different state tax deadlines.

October 16, 2023 - Federal Tax Deadline If You Live in Disaster Areas
According to the IRS website, eligible taxpayers in disaster areas in California, Georgia, and Alabama have until October 16th to file their return.
The tax deadline was further extended from its previous May 15th extension. Taxpayers may also be eligible for tax relief due to their disaster situation.
October 16, 2023 - Federal Tax Deadline If You Filed an Extension
If you need more time to prepare for taxes, consider submitting an extension. This will give you additional time without incurring additional fees or penalties.
While requesting an extension will not push back your payment date, it gives you until October 16th. This allows you to complete your return after the original April 18 deadline without incurring any further costs from the IRS.
October 16, 2023 - California State Tax Deadline for Areas Impacted by Winter Storms
For those Californians who were affected by the December 2022 and January 2023 winter storms, their state tax filing and payment deadlines have been extended to October 16, 2023.
California has also announced tax relief which allows people to deduct disaster losses from their taxes as well as extend various filing deadlines so that they can have time to recover.
May 1, 2023 - Iowa and Virginia State Tax Deadline
If you live in either Iowa or Virginia, your state tax return must be filed by May 1st. Failing to meet this date may result in a penalty or interest being applied to any outstanding taxes owed.
May 2, 2023 - Delaware State Tax Deadline
Residents of Delaware have until May 2nd to submit their 2022 state tax return. Like other states, failing to meet the filing deadline comes with a penalty or interest attached.
May 15, 2023 - Louisiana State Tax Deadline
Taxpayers who reside in Louisiana have a different deadline than most other states. They must have prepared and filed their return by May 15th to avoid penalties.
When Can I Expect My Tax Refund?
Many taxpayers want to know when they can expect their tax refunds. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states that those who file electronically and are owed a refund should be able to receive it within a 21 day period, provided they have chosen direct deposit and have no issues with their return.
The IRS has a law in place which requires them to wait before issuing any refunds to those who claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit. The agency has stated that taxpayers may expect to receive their refunds by February 28th.
